Hahnwald is one of the most exquisite residential areas of Cologne.

The development of Hahnwald, a new villa colony outside the (then) city limits originated from the neighboring villas suburb Marienburg, which had mainly been built by the Cologne-born German-American architect Theodor E. Merrill.
His father, the Boston-born Dr. Hervey Cotton Merrill, had settled in the late 1880′s in Cologne with his German wife Helen Anastasia and had an estate built in the Hahnwald in 1913. As a dentist, H.C. Merrill opened a dental practice in Cologne but was also involved in real estate trading and designed parcs and villas.
In the years after Hahnwald was founded, a total of 86 villas and apartment buildings spread through the site. The new constructions distinguished themselves through their architectural design and equipment as well as their spacious gardens. Hahnwald became over time one of the most exclusive residential areas of Cologne and is still very appreciated today.
Merrill built among others a school, which is known today as the Hermann-Löns school. He also donated a hospital to the community and supported various cultural and scientific institutions in Germany and the USA. The Merrill House is and is now a significant cultural heritage site and several houses. 
Thanks to the many buildings and houses built by the Merills, the memory of this family of patrons lives on in this charming and exclusive district of the south of Cologne.
