Hahnwald,
one of Cologne′s most beautiful residential districts, is also one of the
city′s newest. The impetus for the development of a new villa colony in the
rural area, then outside the city limits, came from Cologne′s neighboring villa
suburb of Marienburg, whose principal architect was the German-American
Cologne-born architect Theodor E. Merrill (1891-1978). His father, Dr. Hervey
Cotton Merrill (1862-1953), who had built an estate in Hahnwald in 1913, is
considered to be the colony′s founder.
In the
years following the founding of Hahnwald, 86 villas and residential buildings,
characterized by their architectural design and furnishings, as well as their
extensive gardens, were built on the site.
Over time, Hahnwald became one of Cologne′s most exclusive residential areas. It remains
a highly sought-after place to live to this day.
